Kodachadri Trek – an amazing experience

It is already Wednesday and my mind is still filled with the pictorious Kodachadri. Even after three days my heart is reluctant to push the memories to a side hole of my heart. ‘Kodachadri’ – the word still thrills me।

I do not know where to begin from. What to have as theme of this write up. I realize that when one has experience still throttling his mind, won’t be able to write anything. One needs to look at the same experience with a distance to produce a good article. So I would just put things as they appear in mind as I go on putting it down..

It all started with a mail I sent across to the team. It carried some photos of gorgeous hill top where we could see the clouds below. Rashmi reacted to it and said we also should go there. We could not plan for that as this is the wrong season. But the trekking bug had already entered many including me. So we started forcing Rashmi to plan for one. I took an initiative and started planning a trek to Kodachadri. I had been to the same place during the same season and I badly wanted to experience it again. A small team got prepared to trek to Kodachadri finally.

The journey:

After a week’s preparation and planning the day arrived. 31st August 2007, Friday evening 7.30 when we got into a Tempo Travellor, I was jumping up with joy. It was almost 7.50 by the time all gathered and took to their seats. It was a long overnight journey ahead. But it seemed that the team wanted entire journey pleasures to start right from the word go. So we stopped at a dhaba to have our dinner.
It was 11.15 when we left Bangalore. We traveled through Tumkur – Tiptur – Arasikere – Birur – Kadur – Tarikere – Bhadravati – Shimoga – Ayanur – Virajpet – Hosanagar – Nagar and reached Sampekatte around 8.30 in the morning.

The journey was a bit tiring. But nothing for sure could stop our enthusiasm. Luckily I got the phone number of the curator of PWD bunglow at the top of the hill in Sampekatte. I called him up and asked him if we can get food and shelter there. I was happy to know that there were vacant rooms for that day. That solved a major headache of mine. If we had not got the accommodation, I know I would not have returned alive! Then we decided to have breakfast at Sampekatte and carry on. We went to bore well and brushed our teeth, had Dosas for breakfast. Amit and Girish fought to have more number of Dosas.

Finally we reached the base at 10am. From the base the top is around 8.5 Kms. We changed our dress, wore more comfortable dress for trekking.
Mike decided to trek in his jeans. He would have realized it by the time he reached half way that he should have stepped out in shorts. When all got ready, we took a photo and then started to climb. Initially everything was nice. It was not steep and everyone was enthusiastic. The beautiful nature around was encouraging Girish to take a lot of photos.
Slowly when the path got slightly steeper, slowly people started feeling tired। It started raining and made the entire journey even more thrilling (problematic?). I for the one who thinks that when we go to trek, if we are not challenged by the Nature, it is not trekking at all. Where else do we understand nature if not in such trips? I was anticipating heavy rain and it did rain heavily. In fact heavier than I expected. For some time the entire atmosphere was a bit fearful too. That’s all a part of trekking and those moments remain with us for a long time.

Tina and Deep started to walk at a steady pace and they found out that the easy way to reach the top quickly and with least troubles is not to stop at any point but keep walking. They did it and reached the top but I must tell that they missed a lot of fun and action. Girish was too tired and was at the end. But he could utilize his slowness in taking beautiful photos.

Right from the beginning everyone was very careful about the leaches. And Mike saw the first leach attack on Ravi. Though Krishna took a photo of that it was not clearly visible. Later Deepak had another when we reached the top. Rajendra the curator of the PWD bunglow put some salt and the leach fell off.

All the guys started asking me what the remaining distance was. Seeing their faded faces, I thought let me not tell them the real one and kept on telling them that it is just after that curve. And there was almost 2 kms distance left. But all could make it at the end.
When we reached the top we realized that many of our bags were not water proof and the cloths we carried were all drenched. It was chilling cold and they had to struggle with the wet cloths. Deepak had tuff time too. He was carrying a lot of money and the notes were all floating in the water. He literally blew hot air had to bring them back to shape.

We requested Rajendra (Curator) to prepare some thing hot to eat and started eating whatever we had packed for the trip। We got hot rice, sambar, to eat and it was heaven for us. Rajendra also arranged a bigger room and more number of beds. Rashmi, Girish, Amit, Deep, Tina, Deepak and Atul wanted sleep and relax.

But Mike and me had some other plans। We along with Ravi sat for a drink. It was around 4pm so we thought not sleep now but to have a drink and talk. So we chose a room adjacent to the main hall which was smaller and sat there. Krishna who could not find place on the bed also came there to sleep but he could not. We started grazing on several topics. The cold kept our drink session more demanding and we went on and on and on…

After some time Atul came with his Vodka. Then Tina, then Rashmi, Girish…. Slowly everyone joined us. By then it was 7pm. Rajendra put Generator for us. They usually put it on for 1 hour a day. That day for us he put it on 2 hours. And till 9pm we had drinks, palm reading by Tina, a lot of fun.

Finally it was dinner time and we had to stop our Drinks session. We had hot dinner and went to sleep by 9pm.

Mike, Tina, Ravi, Krishna and me wanted to visit another peak which was a 0.75kms away. But the weather was so foggy we could not set out. So we just wandered around the guest house.
All the others by then had decided to travel down by Jeep. But Mike, Ravi, Tina and I were ready to trek down. So we had our breakfast and set back. They relaxed for some more time before departing.

When we began trekking down, it was already raining. It was not as difficult as it was while climbing. The weather was pleasant and foggy. We took a few photos and could not do much than talking to each other and trek down. At a curve Mike suddenly stopped me to show a wired kind of an animal, a dark and tall animal. He was thrilled to see some animal which he had not seen so far. But I discouraged his enthusiasm as it was a man with a black back cover. On the way we met a person who was having a Beedi. Just a couple of days before our trip Chander had told us a story and mentioned about beedi. So I wanted Mike to taste a beedi. I borrowed a beedi from him and lit it. Mike had a puff and felt that it was very strong.

We were down the hill in less than two hours. The same time others who came by jeep also joined us. We had change dress and three of us did it in the dirty busstand by the road side. Tina went to a near by house to change. They identified her as the member of the group who brushed near the bore well. The news of the group brushing openly had made news in the village already. It should right? We had Rashmi in the team!

We had Dosas again in the same hotel in Sampekatte and Got in to the vehicle। We had a long way to travel back. And Rashmi’s mind was already bugged with Monday morning’s work and meetings.

We left the place by 1.45pm and took the same route we took to reach Kodachadri. It was a day journey and Mike got some things to see about the rural India. We dropped Tina in Tumkur and we headed towards Bangalore. The city was preparing to go to sleep and our van entered Bangalore.

A short report on team outing

This is a short report that I wrote for my company Sasken network Engineering’s tech-doc team’s page. I am sharing this with you just to extend my team to many like you

Rashmi loves to shock people। Like the one she threw on last Saturday! One sentence and many of our team member’s phones were busy informing about the team outing on Monday। It was a shock when I heard it for the first time, because we were told the previous day that the team outing is postponed। But to be frank it was quite surprising and could really make the Sunday quite cheerful and busy। I kept looking for the Monday morning.

Team outing or team building is an activity which gives the team some time to spend a day out of the office in a pleasant place where the members can mingle and try to work the relationships out to make a better team and increase the productivity at work। But was it something necessary for our team? I had this question in my mind when I started from my home. I wanted to see how would it be in a team outing of such a team which makes an office a garden all the time!

Shilpa, Pallavi and me reached the office sharp at 8am to find only a couple of people in the office. For a mind which had a lot of expectations about the day, waiting till we started towards ‘Manipal County’ was like spending a life time. But again same team came to the rescue. Not to boost but being with the team itself is like being in a world of fun. Finally we left towards Manipal County by around 9.30am.

Manipal County is just around 4.5 kms from our office. When we reached the resort, I could hear Mike saying ‘it seems we are in a different place altogether, it is a very nice place’. It is a beautiful resort. We had our breakfast. And that’s when we understood how Deepak Jr. is professionally equipped to take photos. Believe me, if there are some good photos – unshaken – it is because of Deepak’s photo stand. He took a lot of photos at the breakfast table.

It didn’t take much time for us to jump in to real action. Rashmi pulled all of us to the lawn. She was trying to gear us up for some games. We were divided in to 4 groups. We were made to play a few group games. Those games were really interesting. Our team won 2 out of 4 games we played. We got chocolates as prize. When we were playing tug of war, Jayashree hurt her toe. The impact was so bad, today she walks around the office limping and the nail of one of her toe nail has been removed. She still is trying to find out who did it (who else but Deepak Sr is to be blamed... but don’t tell her!!!).

After that was the much awaited cricket match. Venki and Sunil were the captains and they chose their teams. It was a tight match. Sunil’s team batted first and they scored 91 runs. Venky’s team had to score 92 to win in ten overs. A tuff task but the team played so well, at the end of 9th over it was on 90. The last over was crucial and Rashmi took the ball to bowl. Venki managed to score 11 runs and match got drawn. It was so exiting that Chander who usually absconds if some thing is boring, stood there and cheered the team till the end.

When the cricket match was on, many girls and a couple of boys started twisting their hips for some nice blockbuster songs. Some started playing TT and some Shuttle Badminton. Mike joined hands with Greshma to win a Carom match.

It was good to see Mike involving all the games and activities we played. He wanted to play cricket because that’s a game he had never seen. He also had training on Carom by Greshma.

We all were so tired by then that all of us needed a soothing lunch. The lunch was pretty good. Soon after the lunch we had cake cutting ceremony. Jayashree who by then was a retired hurt candidate, cut the cake on behalf of all.

Then we all got together for a team photo.
Later Rashmi forced us to play dum-sharads. This time the teams were in competition not to find the answers but to give a challenging film names so that the other team members find it difficult to enact/find out.

But Girish and I wanted to through ourselves in the swimming pool. Rashmi finally agreed to it and we both jumped in to the pool. We expected a lot of others to join us, but unfortunately no-one joined. Rather all the girls gathered around the pool to play Antyakshari.

It was a well spent day. It was evening by then and was time to get back. All our bodies were paining a lot. We were thinking if we could get a holiday the next day. But we knew it is not going to happen. So many started thinking of what they should do to get rid of the pain by the next morning.

We left the place at last by 5pm. We carried a lot of nice moments with us. After a week even now we recall many incidents from our team outing. I personally cannot forget Shanmuga’s Sarojadevi dance, Deepak sr’s power display in tug of war, Rashmi’s last over bowling in the cricket match, Greshma’s celebration after the Carom win, Jayasree’s tearful eyes, Mamatha’s sacrifice in the Cricket match, Swapnil’s intelligence in the dum-sherads acting. Almas and shilpa’s photo sessions, Girish’s efforts to swim for 5 meters, Chander and Thug’s support on the cricket ground, Rashmi’s evergreen enthusiasm, Oh… the list does not end.

At the end of the day I felt that we could learn more about our team mates at the outing. We gelled more and that surely did reflect during the post-outing days. Every one wished that these kinds of outings should be organized every now and then. In fact many of us have already started looking forward for the next surprise announcement by Rashmi.
Finally we should thank Rashmi for organizing such a nice team outing at a very short time span.

I know that what ever is said here is very less compared to the experience all of us had there. This just has details which I noticed amidst my involvement in the activities. I feel strongly that many should put in their views if this has to be complete one. Hope a lot others are going to pen their experiences at least now.

Three cheers to this genderless, fearless, sorrow less, (do I need to say shameless?) Crazy TEAM.

Kannada Times...

Hi all,

If you are a Bangalorian or a Kannadiga, here is good news. A new weekly has arrived. I am very happy about this magazine "KANNADA TIMES" (You can see the cover of the first edition which is displayed in the begining) because of several reasons:

1. Unlike many tabloids it is not crime oriented
2. Most sensible bunch of Kannada writers are associated with it.
3. The reading is simply superb and it has a life in it.

There are many to list but for those who have been observing Kannada news weeklies, the above listed reasons are more than enough to cheer the new magazine. Prof. Ki Ram Nagaraj, the moving encyclopedia of Kannada Literature is writing regularly in Kannada Times. Dr. Nataraj Huliyar has taken a big responsibility too. It has its office in Bangalore. The phone number of the office is 080 41618505.

If you get to read one, kindly post your comments here. May be we might contribute our valuable suggestions and help the magazine to improve in all respects. After all it is another Kannadada koosu.
